Being a Nigerian football supporter could give one a heart attack. Over and over again, the Super Eagles of Nigeria have disappointed us and shredded our hearts. However, It doesn’t matter how unhappy we are with our national team due to poor performance, we still rally behind them whenever they play because that’s the true spirit of Naija.
Below are 9 times the Nigerian Super Eagles broke our hearts
1) 2005 World Cup qualifiers. Nigeria VS Angola.
This match, that was played in Kano, painfully introduced us to the tie-breaking concept of the head-to-head rule. A win against Angola, in the penultimate qualifying match, would have kept us in a safe zone going into the last game. But we were disappointed because the game ended 1-1 and Angola qualified on head-to-head despite trailing use by whooping 8 goals. Paulo Figueiredo’s freekick on the hour canceled out Jay-Jay Okocha’s 15th-minute opener to give Angola an unlikely point.
2) Ghana/Nigeria CAF Nation’s Cup 2000. Nigeria vs Cameroon
This was heartbreaking. The match took place in National Stadium, Surulere, which would have served as a home advantage but yest again, super eagles broke our hearts.
The stadium was parked with Nigerian supporters but the game ended on disappointment for the fans
We were trailing by two goals at half time, courtesy of goals from Samuel Eto’o and Patrick Mboma Scores. We leveled up at half time with a goal from Rafael Chukwu and a stunner by Jay Jay Scored. Unfortunately, we lost the penalty shootout.
3) Korea Japan 2002 world cup. Nigeria vs Sweeden
Ok, so the super Eagles started this on a good note with Julius Aghaowa’s powering header giving us the lead. Harry Larson pulled Sweden back into the game with a nice finish before a porous defense and senseless tackle by Ifeanyi Udeze gifted Sweden a penalty that was put away by Harry Larson. Jayjay Okocha also had a nice opportunity to set up free Bathelomen Obechi but was selfish
We could have beaten Sweden easily and get 3 points or at least get a draw.
4) Brazil 2014 FIFA world cup. Nigeria vs Iran
Nigeria came into this game as the clear favorite with star-studded players playing in Top clubs in Europe. But the game ended in a disappointing goalless draw with our rusty team and toothless attackers. Fans believed The super eagles underrated the Iranians; which begs the question, how can you underrate a team playing in the world cup? Like WTF?
5) Ghana 2008 CAF Nations Cup
Another disappointment from the Super Eagle of Nigeria came during the 2008 nations cup where they were grouped alongside Ivory Coast, Mali, and Benin republic. It was unbelievable that the super eagles could only grab 4 points out of possible 9. They were sent packing after losing 2:1 to their noisy neighbour, Ghana at the quarter-finals.
Our top scorer in the tournament scored just 2 goals
6) 2013 confederation
Fans had high hopes for the 2013 confederation’s cup. But that hope was dashed yet again. The super eagles managed to secure just three points and could only win Tahiti, a team that conceded 26 goals, scoring 1. Guess who that 1 goal was against? Yeah, you guessed right.
7) 2010 nations cup semi-final. Ghana vs Nigeria
The painful part about this match is that Ghana qualified for the Nation’s cup final for the first time in 18 years. We could have won the semifinal with high profile lazy players like Obafemi Martin, Obinna Nsofor, Ozaze Odewimgwe, Mikel Obi, Taye Taiwo, and so on. We should have won that game, easily.
8) 2010 World Cup
Super Eagles fans expected The Super eagles to proceed to the next round alongside Argentina but were left with sour grape in their mouth when the Super Eagles managed just one point.
President Jonathan Goodluck was infuriated by the poor performance of the super eagles at world cup that he placed a ban on the Super eagles.
Not to mention Yakubu Aiyegbeni missing 2 meters sitter against South Korea that even my grandmother would have put away easily.
The ban was lifted after pressure from FIFA, and the super eagles failed to qualify. The qualifier was meant to be easy, at least on paper, but the super yet again disappointed
9) 2015 Nations Cup Qualifier
Another embarrassing tournament is 2015 nations cup qualifier. Pitted against Congo, Sudan, and South Africa, the super eagles failed to qualify from the group. The height of the embarrassment came when we were mauled by Congo in Abuja by 3 goals to 2.
