African Reggae Star, Majekodunmi Fasheke AKA Majek Fashek, was born in Benin City to an Edo mother and an Ijesha father but identifies with his Benin roots. His father died when he was 11 years old and was raised by his mother, a businesswoman, who supplied concrete to road contractors, she inspired him through her participation in traditional religious ceremonies, he soon joined the choir in his local white garment church and learned to play the trumpet and guitar whilst composing songs for the choir.
In the early eighties, Fashek, who at the time went by the stage name Rajesh Kanal, joined the group Jastix with McRoy Gregg, and Drummer Black ‘Rice. They were best known as the in-house band on the show Music Panorama on NTA Benin and toured with fellow reggae group The Mandators. Jastix were also session musicians for upcoming reggae singer Edi Rasta, who would later be known as Evi-Edna Ogholi.
Majek Fashek attracted international attention, when his self-penned tune, “Send Down The Rain,” appeared to coax a rainstorm that ended one among the worst droughts in Nigeria’ s history.
Labeled a “prophet”, Fashek went on to become one among Africa’s greatest reggae-influenced performers. His debut solo album, Prisoner Of Conscience, released in 1988, sold quite 200,000 copies in Nigeria alone.
While he developed an early interest in the music of Jamaica, Fashek was equally drawn to the music of Indian cinema. Learning to play guitar while in lyceum, Majek and his crew began playing in clubs within the capital city of Lagos.
Majek Fashek’s Personal Life And Death
Fashek was married to Rita Fashek who inspired the song “Without You”; the couple had four children together, but have since divorced. it was revealed in 2015 that Majek Fashek was bankrupt and battling drug addiction. After admitting that he needed help, he was admitted into a drug rehabilitation center in Abuja
Besides his struggle with drug addiction, other health conditions required his hospitalization on several occasions. He was rumored dead in September 2019 by various media outlets but his manager quelled the rumors, confirming that Majek had indeed been critically ill, hospitalized at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich, England, and in dire need of financial assistance.

He died in the early hours of June 2nd, 2020 at the age of 57. His death was confirmed by his manager Omenka Uzoma, on the late singer’s official Instagram handle.
